Holding steps/distances equal, does purposeful cardio serve any benefits versus simply getting more steps in throughout the day?

More specifically, Im more sedentary at home versus when Iām on campus, so I go for runs to get my steps in rather than just walk from building to building, etc. I end up with roughly 10-12k steps daily either way, but my heart rate is up during my runs obviously. Does this serve any advantages in terms of caloric burn?
