I've seen a lot of posts in various places on Reddit either with people asking about or recommending Babish knives. I've never seen a post that genuinely shows how these knives perform when they are not right out of the box.
Disclaimer: I've never owned one or picked one up, but I literally laughed when I saw one being used in action on his own channel.
Whatever you might say about Babish as a cook, or as content creator, I feel that it should also be said: these are not top quality knives. They are not a great "bang for your buck." They are not Shun knives at lower cost. If you like Babish and want to support him, or you want to have his branded knives, great! Go for it! But let's at least try to be honest with what they are and aren't.
So without further ado, the Babish knife in action
I've seen a bunch of videos where he has to put an ungodly amount of pressure into his cuts, but this clip really stood out to me. Alvin (the mind behind the 150 hour chocolate cake and some of the best cooking videos I've watched), can be seen cutting an onion using a babish knife, and literally banging on the spine to get it through...an onion. I've seen Alvin using knives on his own channels and he clearly knows what he's doing, so I have to conclude that it's the fault of the knife in the video.
Anyway, thought this would be a nice addition to the posts saying it passes the hair test right out of the box. For 30 bucks your options may be slim, but a Kiwi or Fibrox knife or even a Dexter Russell will be better than this. There is no reason to spend money on this knife unless you specifically want a Babish knife and do not care about quality.
