REM Sleep Supplements

Hey guys!
Quick question:
I've heard a lot of supplements are good for sleep
Magnesium (ZMA in general)
5-HTP
Lavender
Etc.
Do we have proven, peer-reviewed compounds and chemicals that are good for not only initiating sleep but getting good sleep?
ie. Alcohol helps you pass out but makes it less effecttive. If I want the best sleep possible, what can I take, assuming I'm getting the correct number of hours?
