Alarm?

I'm sure we've all have had this happen. You wake up, look at your clock and it shows 05:54. Your alarm is set for 05:55...
I work a 7/7 schedule (work 7 days, then I'm off 7 days). On my "on" days, I rarely have to get up at the same time, so there is no regular schedule I could get used to. Yet, I often wake up a minute or a few minutes before my alarm will go off.
How? How does my brain know it's time to wake up?
