For the past few years I have very casually been involved with a friend who lives several states away from me. We see each other once or twice a year. He is in love with me and I care for him too but our relationship has never progressed into serious dating due to the distance and his inability to travel to me, as well as a few other factors. We have both dated other people casually during this time.
I recently met someone locally and we have begun a monogamous relationship. I have to tell my long distance friend that if he wants to continue our relationship it will have to be fully platonic moving forward. We both knew this day would come, but I know he is going to be crushed. I know I can’t avoid hurting him but I want to try my best. How do I break off the physical/romantic part of our relationship in the gentlest possible way?
