Unexpected terminology

I was having a really interesting conversation with a fellow polyam friend about relationship dynamics and he said "Yeah the live in partner dynamic just seems so difficult to me".... it took me a whole minute to realise he was referring to what I have with my partner as I've never considered the term live in. Haha.
Have any of you had terms that describe something so obvious in relationships it's gone totally over your head?
