I’ve had panic disorder my whole life and usually only benzodiazepines will help me. Since we know some studies show that people with panic disorder have differences in GABA receptors or transmission, I’ve been playing around with some plant medicines known to increase GABA like passion flower and valerian. Finding Traditional Medicinals Nighty Night Extra tea to be legit at helping me calm. So yep I’m the gal drinking nighttime tea with my breakfast. Use with caution, of course- most docs don’t recommend combining herbal GABA helpers with benzodiazepines (or before using heavy machinery/driving). I’ve found some help from straight passion flower supplements as well. Both valerian and passion flower have reasonably respectable literature and research basis. For most of us they won’t stop a severe panic attack in its tracks the way Xanax will, but I’d like to reduce my reliance on Xanax - especially when I found myself panicking in France and running dangerously low on my precious benzos. Of course, thanks to big pharma et al., there is little research on plant medicine’s long term use, so use at your own risk. Don’t forget also to include plant meds on the list of medicines you give your doc or pharmacist, because some interact with other meds. Sending love and wishing y’all peace. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1089777/
