Feeling of darkness closing in when going to sleep

Whenever i close my eyes ready to go to sleep i feel darkness go over my entire body. It's really scary and it makes me feel like I'm suffocating.
Has anyone had a similar experience. I'm literally scared of going to sleep and that something bad will happen to my heart
