Fasting and muscle loss.

Reading around on r/fasting, some people claim that muscle mass can be maintained with no consumption of calories (short 3-5 day fasts) because the body knows not to burn protein for energy first. Although I’m skeptical, I’ve lost fat and even built Muscle on low calorie, (lower than most for their body weight) high protein diet, usually with a 10:1 (lb of body weight to gram protein) ratio. But having no food for a few days and maintaining muscle mass, I don’t understand. Has anyone dabbled? I’d like to experiment with a short fast to see if any of the claimed benefits are real.
