Do you know if it's better to maintain a consistent fasting schedule than it is to switch it up?

I'm hearing conflicting information from people.
One camp of thought is that you should have a set schedule so "your body knows when to burn or store fat."
The other says that surprising your body is good, much like in exercise.
I just want a straight answer.
