Catch 22 with protein shakes

After using a calorie tracking app, I realized I’m getting far less protein than I thought so I’ve been drinking protein shakes more. However, since I started doing that I’m struggling to get enough calories overall and I’m starting to notice the lack of energy at the gym. Protein shakes kill my appetite, after I drink one I feel full for a really long time. Does this happen to anyone else?
