Clapton was and still is the most overrated guitarist of his era relative to the amount of praise he gets.. Any of his major contemporaries (Hendrix, Page, Beck, McLaughlin, Garcia, etc.) were far more inventive, interesting and important.. His songwriting/musical direction deserves more praise than his guitar playing.. And even in that regard he objectively peaked over half a century ago and has been coasting off that work ever since...
