I broke my sesamoid bone in my left foot playing volleyball over 13 years ago, by constantly landing on my left foot (also turns out I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome which I only recently got diagnosed 2 years ago, but certainly was a factor). I never did anything for it bc whoever I saw at the time told me there was not much that could be done for that type of break and I was heading in to play college volleyball so I wasn’t about to stop playing - I just took two weeks off during summer (when I broke it).
Now, 13 years later, I’ve had 7 knee surgeries (5 on left and 2 on right) and I very clearly walk incorrectly. I have noticed a LOT of pain in my ball of my foot when I walk correctly. Instead, I roll my foot outwards which further applies pressure to the wrong parts of my leg. I am somewhat knock kneed too, so walking incorrectly at all is just going to further worsen my knee issues.
I need to walk correctly, but from online it seems like they’d just have to remove the bone and idk if that would help, considering I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome.
Not sure who to see either - an orthopedic foot doctor/surgeon or podiatrist, but I clearly need to figure something out here so I can walk correctly again. I also have started getting really bad plantar fasciitis again and wonder if it’s related (though it is bilateral, not just left foot). I compensate heavily on right foot/leg though so that could be why pain is so bad on my right heel.
I did get custom orthotics made as well by my last PT, but they literally don’t fit any of my shoes even with the old soles taken out - it seems like I’ll need to go up to a shoe store with them and see what I can do but I don’t imagine me going up a half size (and therefore making it too big everywhere else since I have skinny feet) would be ideal? But they were expensive and supposed to correct my wonky walking. My PT didn’t know about my sesamoid toe so idk if these are good for that either…
Anyways just looking to hear personal experiences if anyone has had any success with a sesamoidectomy OR what you have done for sesamoid bone pain that makes you walk funny from the pain?
Not looking for medical advice, just personal anecdotes since EDS is such a tricky disorder and I can’t just ask the general public if this was a success for them or not since they don’t have the same issues I do.
Thanks!
