How to figure out whether my cutting board is adequate or not?

Post Body

I bought two cutting boards way before I got into nice knives. I have no clue whether they are ok to use or too hard, nor do I know what wood they're made out of. Is there a way to determine whether they are damaging my knife? One is a dark wood with lighter highlights, very glossy and smooth (with some scratches from me using serrated knives), and the other is a very light wood with a textured, rough surface.
