Hi everyone,
I've been following r/ashtanga for sometime since trying to re-develop my Ashtanga practice and just wanted to get some advice on a few things that I think are holding me back.
Just a bit of background first though. I started practicing Ashtanga seriously in December 2017 during a hospital admission for anorexia (pardon any controversy but I am a 21yo male with an eating disorder). The circumstances were such that I was practicing from 6:00-7:30am following this lead class by John Scott while consuming around 5,000 calories over 6 meals every day. My vitals were normal and my BMI was around 20. When I wasn't doing the physical practice, I got deep into the philosophy. By the time I left hospital I was able to make it up to Navasana, restricted due to time available and ability to get into the postures.
I have attended a fundamentals class and my practice was steady until about a month ago when it became on and off as my weight fluctuated as part of a relapse, and I injured my knees pushing too hard with (an incorrect) padmasana. I have recommitted to practice in the last two weeks though, restarting with that same led class, and, I suspect, due to a BMI of 16 and getting around 1,200 calories doing OMAD, I'm stuck around Janu A. I know low physical energy levels are due to the low weight but my muscles and joints are often too tight and sore for me to get deeper or completely into postures or push through to Navasana again, let alone further. Doing OMAD, I notice greater energy levels and better "flow" when I start the practice but naturally I have to stop earlier (do I need to just eat more?). All of this naturally affects the motivation to practice, even though during and afterwards is just bliss.
I guess I have a few questions...I know we're all individuals, but
1) How do you think I should progress with the physical practice?
2) How fine is the line between eating to stay light for practice and making sure the muscles recover so you can practice?
3) I know there is a thread for this, but how does diet and health and those kinds of parameters affect your personal practice?
Thank you all so much for any advice you can give...and even if you just sat there and read through all of that!
