Given that the events of the movies had ghosts becoming increasingly powerful as a result of end-of-the-world scenarios and the shows afterword show that the amount of paranormal activity didn't fully slow down, this means that Muggles can possibly see ghosts and ghosts can now interact with the living.
I fully see some ghosts helping Muggles, like the Fat Friar or Sir Nicholas... or causing trouble, like Moaning Myrtle. And then there's Peeves...

Exactly. If were were to plausibly link both universes then one could argue it was the significant increase in the ambient spiritual energy that allowed Muggles to directly perceive ghosts. Kind of like how humans can't see ultra-violet paint directly even though certain animals can normally. But in the presence of strong UV light it becomes possible to see the paint as the UV light gets re-radiated by the paint in human visible wavelengths, so to when there is an unusually large quantity of ambient spiritual energy in the area then it helps Muggle to perceive that which normally only Wizards who are naturally tuned into it are able to see.
