What are Civ-Servers?
Civ-servers can be best described as âanarchistic gaming experimentsâ. The idea behind the Civ-server concept, and the 5 Civ-servers/iterations - Civcraft 1.0, Civcraft 2.0, Civcraft 3.0 (aka trash), Devoted, Civclassics - and hopefully now Abject Poverty Craft is to create a semi-realistic world that requires to people to work together to survive against both the environment and each-other.
One of the key philosophies that makes this possible is an anything goes (within the bounds of reason) mentality, where the admin staff exists solely to maintain resource scarcity, and ensure that the mods and experience are running both safely and smoothly.
History of the Civ-server experience.
Civ-servers have had shortcomings over the years. Civcraft 1.0 and 2.0 ultimately were killed by carelessness related to duping, admins, and the leaking of the resource map. Civcraft 3.0 suffered heavily from being both overly ambitious, and attempting to do things that are not possible within the minecraft game, and minecraft game engine. Devoted suffered from a critically small playerbase, and ultimately admin burnout, despite being run by arguably the most creative and intelligent admin team out of all the civ iterations. Finally, Civclassics suffers from an increasing frustration and boredom with minecraft, and general stagnation in the experience - Civcraft has, as an idea, gone as far using the minecraft game as it possibly can go.However, Civ-servers continue to draw players in, and keep them engaged with each other in interesting ways that are not often seen in video-gaming, even in the realm of MMORPGs. Cities have been built and razed. Server have been invaded. Mythologies have been spun from both the real history of the server, and mis-remembered half-truths. Resource scarcity ensures gameplay continues to get interesting throughout an iterationâs life. Interactions between players to foster and build community against both the environment, and others have created lasting friendships. Stories have been written and disseminated. Cities and empires have been built and rebuilt across eras with different leadership (the Mt. Augusta on Civclassics, for example, has only ever had a thin thread of relation to the original Civcraft 1.0 Mt.Augusta and New Augusta, for instance). At the end of the day, what makes civ-servers fun, and keeps people playing is, as advertised in the original server ads for Civcraft 1.0, the fact that the world feels alive in being run and written solely by player interaction.
Why Build a Vintage Story Civ-Server?
Vintage story offers features that the civ-server community has long been seeking as a game, and as a platform, that were not, and never will be possible to implement in Minecraft. Resource scarcity in Vintage Story is trying by default, pushing many players to play on servers despite the incredibly granular world creation, and well-documented features. Farming is interesting, and rewarding. Gathering materials for large builds takes time and effort, but not too much so.What Vintage story has, however, that minecraft has always lacked, is the ability to easily mod, an interesting and realistic progression, and a dedicated development staff that is aware of and responsive to community needs in these regards. These things have allowed the Abject Poverty server Staff to get civ-server mods developed in less time than the transition between Civcraft 2.0/3.0 and Civclassics (which involved porting the necessary server plugins to a completely new version of minecraft) took, despite being a completely different game. Vintage story is also far more stable than Minecraft, and runs far more smoothly despite being consistently updated due to the skill of its developers.Ultimately, Vintage story ticks the boxes necessary for a lasting civ-server experience such as: new and engaging content, built-in citadel reinforcements courtesy of the developers, strong PVE, PVP with lots of potential, resource scarcity, and mechanics that allow for strong community cooperation. We hope that Vintage story will finally make civ-servers interesting again, and carry it into the future.
