The Rangers only played five games this week. They lost two of three at home against the Angels and split a two-game series in Miami.
We have a new leader in the AL West, the dreaded Angels Angels of Anaheim.
Tm | W | L | Games Gained |
---|---|---|---|
LA Angels | 4 | 1 | - |
Oakland | 1 | 4 | -4 |
Seattle | 3 | 3 | -0.5 |
Houston | 4 | 2 | 0.5 |
Texas | 2 | 3 | -1.0 |
Now that Texas is without a doubt not in the playoff race and is, in fact, one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball, let us look at the reverse standings. This is obviously pretty important. The worse the Rangers are, the better draft position they'll have. Also they will be allowed to spend more on draft picks and foreign players.

Last week the Rangers were outscored by 20 runs over 7 games. This week they had a bunch of one-run games and were basically even.

While they weren't horrid on offense this week, they weren't very good either. The pitching was acceptable.

Adrian Beltre awoke from a mild slump to emerge as the team's best hitter. Leonys continued a streak of good hitting that began the previous week. Is Shin-Soo Choo healing? Well it's a small sample size but he hit pretty well, belting the Rangers' only homer in five games. Adduci, Carp, and Soto continued to be bad. Nobody else really shined but I'm going to guess Andrus picks things up this coming week. He's hitting line drives and having good at-bats.

Depending on which numbers you want to look at, there were positive things about every start. It's particularly good to Martinez and Tepesch string some good outings together. I didn't see Colby's start. The numbers would suggest he was unlucky but people told me he was hit pretty hard.
Without Darvish, the rotation's full of back of the rotation pitchers (at best). That considered, the whole group did okay this week.

The pen was very stingy with the runs this week. Feliz had some issues but the rest of them combined to do pretty well. A few too many walks. The numbers suggest they got a bit lucky, but it's nice to see those strikeouts.
Conclusions:
We all know that the Rangers are a bad baseball team, but at least there has been some improvement recently with the pitching. The bullpen has settled down and there are some very interesting arms out there. Tepesch and Martinez seem to be finding some sort of groove. Lewis has improved quite a lot and Mikolas has good stuff.
The offense isn't as inspiring, but we're used to that.
