I'm not going to make a screenshot for every table, but if you're using a mobile client and you press this link, it should make the tables readable.

8/81 - 08/14

This week the Rangers did their best to win that first overall pick in the 2015 draft, losing two of three to the Astros in Houston and dropping three of four to the Rays at home. They're currently tied with Colorado for the worst record in baseball: 47-74.

The following table contains the AL West teams' records for this week and how many games they made up or lost against the leader, Oakland.

Tm W L Games Gained
Oakland 3 4 -
LA Angels 3 2 1.0
Seattle 5 1 2.5
Houston 3 4 0.0
Texas 2 5 -1.0

Now that Texas is without a doubt not in the playoff race and is, in fact, one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball, let us look at the reverse standings. This is obviously pretty important. The worse the Rangers are, the better draft position they'll have. Also they will be allowed to spend more on draft picks and foreign players.

The pitching wasn't much different this week than it was last week, which is to say they really weren't as terrible as you might think. The hitting was every bit as bad as you probably imagine, though.

For the second week in a row, Adam Rosales was the team's top hitter. There's something wrong there. And he wasn't really all that good, posting a wRC of 127. I mean that's good, but you expect one or two people on the team to have done better than that over a week.

Roogie came alive and that's good news. Beltre was struggling last week but put together an average performance this week, with the peripheral numbers suggesting he may have been a bit unlucky. Daniel Robertson's performance dropped way off but by his standards this was still a very good week. Martin was pretty useless until the last few games. In spite of what the full week's numbers say, he's red hot.

Sadly, this is the first sub-bar week that Elvis Andrus has had in a while. Hopefully he can get hot again.

JP Arencibia has turned back into a pumpkin.

The rotation was bad this week with the only good performances coming from the Nicks. Both were impressive even though Martinez couldn't get past the fifth inning. I thought Ross looked better last night than his line indicated, but things got worse for him as the night went on and in the end it was a forgettable start. Mikolas was awful. Lewis was okay but walked too many and didn't get many strikeouts. Darvish had a bad outing and is now on the DL with a sore elbow. He claims the elbow wasn't bothering him until a couple days after he started but I have my doubts about that.

The bullpen was actually pretty good with the exception of Neal Cotts, who was both unlucky and bad. Feliz, Mendez, Tolleson, Klein...all pitched well. Alex Claudio made his debut and was pretty good. Hell, even Baker was good. The only ones who weren't were the aforementioned Cotts and Nate Adcock, who has since been optioned.

Conclusions:

I suppose it's good for the club this year when they're beaten by the Astros, but I still hate it. Due to the behavior of a select few Astros fans, I'm starting to buy into this Selig-manufactured rivalry. Plus they're the other worst team in the AL. It just feels bad.

Getting beaten by the Rays -- even at home -- doesn't feel as bad. That's a team on the warpath.

Anyway, this should be about progress, right? Well it was good to see Odor hitting. It's good to see that Beltre isn't slowing down. I just hope that Andrus puts this week behind him and continues his strong second half.

Tepesch and Lewis continue to look like viable options for next year's rotation. I still don't think Martinez is, but it's good to see progress from him anyway. Need to see more from Ross. Mikolas still intrigues me because it looks like he may have the raw stuff to be a decent MLB starter. Having only recently converted from a relief role I would say he might be better suited to AAA when Darvish returns from the DL. While Ross is probably going to be coming out of the pen next year I still want to see what he has as a starter.

Lots of positives from the bullpen this week. Most of those guys are under team control next year. It's important they do well.
