Some background: my music store chain handles all of its credit in-house. So whenever someone wants to put an instrument on monthly payments or rent gear, we don't run a credit check, but we try to get as much info as we can. I'm part of the team that approves these kinds of transactions.
I go today to approve a small rental a father is doing for his son. The rental form is half-assedly filled out, so I know I'm gonna have to ask for more. I do that, and the father (SF for sketchy father) counters with this:
SF: is this really necessary?
Me: Yes. It is.
SF: why do you need this for an $18 (aside: monthly) rental?
Me: well, we don't do any third party checks or anything, so we like to get as much info as we can so that if there's an issue, we have the means to contact you.
SF: ...No, I'm not giving you my employer info.
Me: okay, is there any reason why you don't want to?
The next line made me chuckle afterwards:
SF: it's... It's sensitive.
Me: ... Sensitive?
SF: yes.
I glare at him and continue going through the application with him. The value wasn't that high, so I let it go; he didn't seem like the kind of guy who regularly defrauds us, so why deny him and make a big stink? When all was said and done, I gave him my best "have a good day, sir" in my flattest voice.
What would be so sensitive that he can't list what he does? Is he a sleeper agent sent to overthrow the Canadian government? I guess we'll never know...
