The old man and the ukulele
Post Body

Haven't written a good/heartwarming post here in a while, since most of my customers are extremely rage-inducing. And it only seems to be my store...

Anyway, today I get called into the acoustic guitar room to help a customer. I'm met by a middle-aged lady and her uncle, shopping for a ukulele for his 93rd (!) birthday. I ask them what they want...

me: so what kind of ukulele do you want to get?

uncle: a cheap one! whichever is the cheapest.

niece: no no, uncle, don't worry about money. (to me) can you show us a nice one?

I end up showing them the cheap ($50) uke first, but then I put a slightly more expensive one in his hands, and he starts playing some songs. he remarks that he "used to be able to play very nicely, but not so much any more". I'm already smiling on the inside because this man is so polite and endearing, as was his niece. After a few minutes of trying some other ukes, they settle on one for $150. I tell them I'm going to get a new one, and Uncle drops the best line of the day on me:

"Do you sell the hula girls as well?"

I laugh and reply "I wish we did! Maybe I'll ask my boss."

They buy the ukulele and go. I hope he plays that thing to his heart's content. By the way, there was NO WAY I would have ever guessed that this man was almost 93, because he didn't look a day over 70.
