Rentals at my music store chain can be the worst place in the store to deal with customers. The shadiest people can be found in rentals, and most are appalled when we tell them that they can't rent two 18" subwoofers, 2 mains, and a mixer for their DJ party. most of the time it's because they don't want to fill out the minimally invasive rental agreement. (put it this way: certain contest forms ask for more info than we do)

a man came in one day when i was working, and he inquired about renting stuff for a house party. I tell him what he needs and he's ok. let's call him Ass Head or AH for short.

AH: I'm not filling this shit out.

ESG: I'm sorry?

AH: You guys are asking for too much info. I'm not filling this form out.

ESG: Well, sir, in order for us to rent to you, I do need this form filled out. (name, address, drivers license, employer is all we need)

AH: But I've been doing business wiith you for years. Don't you guys have me in your system?

ESG: checks computer yeah, but we don't have a rental agreement on file for you.

AH: more muttering

At this point I get my manager, TW. He's bearded and Irish. Customers don't fuck with TW when he breaks things down.

TW: I understand you'd like to rent from us today, sir?

AH: Yes but I'm not filling this out. jabs at form

TW: Okay, sir, that's fine. But if you want us to rent to you today, we're going to require a full value deposit. (at this point it's about $2500 worth of gear)

AH: stunned

TW: It's up to you, sir. you can fill the form out, or leave us with (checks screen) $2500, which you'll get back at the time of return.

AH decides that his house party really isn't that important, and gives up. This is a very common occurrence at my store and the others. Most times it doesn't go as smoothly as my encounter.
