It really bothers me when people ask for discounts when there is no reason to (i.e. cosmetic flaws, floor models, etc).
A South Asian family walked in to my store yesterday with 15 minutes to go until close. I ended up helping them out - they wanted to buy a digital keyboard for their son. Easy enough. I answer their questions and do my regular sales spiel. When the father asks me if a bench and stand are included, I say "no, most digital keyboards don't. You have to buy them seperately." He looked at me like I had just quoted something in gibberish. There was an uneasy split second between us before he asked me how much the stand & bench would run him. I tell him, and then he consults with his wife, so I give them a minute. When I come back - 5 minutes 'till close at this point - the conversation went something like this:
Me: so, are we going to go with this one? Him: is there anything you can do about the price? Me: well, no. not really. that's a guaranteed low price, so you're very unlikely to find that exact keyboard for less elsewhere. Him: blank stare Me: ... Him: come on. Me: that's as low as you're going to find it, sir. anywhere. Him: Seriously? That's the lowest? Me: Yes. Him: but I'm going to be buying the bench and stand too. can you do anything else? Me: No, I can't. It's not my call. Him: but I drove from [place] to get here. Me: I'm sorry, sir, but the price is what it is. Him: ok. are you sure? Me: very sure.
He then looks at the box for any discernible damage, hoping that I'll renege and give him a discount. The box was in good shape and I had to assure him several times that there was a brand new keyboard inside. He relents and tells me that he'll get the stand and bench too. Turns out that we didn't have the bench I quoted him on, so I took the floor model thinking "well, it is kinda beat up. I can give him a break on that at least." We go to cash out and I give him the total.
Me: Okay, that's $272.06. Him: hesitant are you sure? Me: yes. bench, stand, keyboard. I gave you a break on the bench since it's a floor model. I can give it to you for $25. Him: that's only $5 off. are you serious? Me: annoyed okay, $20? Him: laughs Me: Seriously, sir, I could get in trouble if I lower it any more. I don't have the authority to do that. Him: But you can't give me a break on the piano? Me: annoyed further let me ask [manager on duty].
MOD tells me the exact same thing I said earlier, but in a firmer tone than I did (not that I wasn't firm before). Finally, dude stops fighting and tells me to leave out the bench. No discount on anything in the end. By this time it's 10 minutes past close.
TL;DR - guy tries to haggle for a discount because he drove two hours to get there, manager and I shut him down. Moral of the story: haggling doesn't always work out.
