Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) causing joint pain

Post Body

Middle age F here, dx fibromyalgia w/usual attendent issues. First and continual major complaint is chronic tendonitis, mostly in hands and Achilles. Started after Lyme infection. A doctor also noticed that I have loose joints.

Not taking any Rx right now. Doctors tried lots of different things. Nothing really touched the deep muscle soreness and tightnes and joint pain. Meloxicam actually made my knuckle joints red and inflamed.

Got some PEA to see if it might help. Started taking it 3x/day but had insomnia. Cut the evening dose, then also the lunch dose, and started sleeping a bit better. But then the knee pain started.

I tried stopping and restarting the PEA to make sure, and I'm afraid it's the culprit. A few hours after taking a dose this morning I got a burning pain behind my right kneecap. My left knee also hurt a bit (if I keep taking a dose daily the left will also get very painful). I tried sticking it out a few days before, hoping that this effect would go away and instead it kept getting worse. Upon stopping, the pain goes away in about 36-48 hours.

Just like Meloxicam, another "pain reliever" is causing me more pain. I'm flabbergasted.

With Meloxicam the doctor just shrugged and told me to stop taking it. Ugh. Can anyone offer any idea or theories about why PEA is having this effect me?

Maybe if I have an idea what's causing the pain, I can try to do the opposite.
