Hey guys,
I recently started taking some magnesium and zinc supplements. Both are of the glycinate form. The magnesium is 400 mg and the zinc is 15 mg.
However, it has come to my attention that the dosing may not be straightforward and I am hoping for some insight from others.
The recommended intake of magnesium is about 400 mg per day, while that of zinc is about 11 mg per day.
But what I realized is that the supplements are not pure, or "elemental" magnesium/zinc, but are chelated, which means they are bound to other compounds (in this case glycine) to increase tolerability and bioavailability.
Therefore, when I take a 400 mg capsule of magnesium glycinate for example, I am really only taking 60 mg of magnesium itself due to the bulk of the molecule being made up of other things. The bottle I have even alludes to this on the back:
"60 mg magnesium as 400 mg magnesium glycinate".
Does this mean I can/should take multiple 400 mg magnesium glycinate pills per day?
Thanks for any help!
