LIDAR ([Light Detection And Ranging](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LIDAR)) is an optical remote sensing technology that can measure the distance to, or other properties of, targets by illuminating the target with laser light and analyzing the backscattered light.

LIDAR technology has applications in geomatics, archaeology, geography, geology, geomorphology, seismology, forestry, remote sensing, atmospheric physics, airborne, laser altimetry, and digital terrain modelling.
