Torn meniscus when dislocating kneecap…doc is pushing surgery but I feel little to no pain in my knee.

Post Body

I broke my ankle and damaged my knee on a skiing trip. I’m about 10 days away from a walking boot and I got results from my MRI this week. The doctor says I had dislocated my kneecap and it went back into place (no surprise there as I heard a pop then subsequent pop a few seconds later) he also mentioned I have a slight tear in my meniscus. The othro is saying I should have surgery to shave off the injured meniscus along with PT to strengthen the patella (he had said they can do a procedure on the kneecap while in there but if it wasn’t for the meniscus they’d only recommend PT).

I feel like I am being pressured into an operation when my only discomfort is some swelling in the knee and the broken ankle I suffered at the same time. When the doctor pressed on where the tear is to show me where I’d be feeling discomfort, I didn’t feel any pain. I can bend my leg pretty easily and while I’ve only just been cleared to put pressure on that leg, when I do I feel no pain.

Has anyone else had a similar experience either getting surgery or not who can share their experience. My ankle is almost healed and I want to see how it responds to walking, etc. before I go under the knife but the doc is saying I will have discomfort which I currently don’t really have.
