I'm helping a friend repair her credit, and I need help with what I think will be one of the more difficult accounts to remove...
It is a Chase Bank credit card account, ~10,000 balance, and the last payment was made august 2018. It has been charged off, and is listed as being held by Chase Bank, so I guess it was not sold to a collection agency.
Questions:
1) The card was opened in Ohio, but she is currently a California resident. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that since the last payment was made over 3 years ago, this means they cannot sue to collect the debt if she attempts to dispute it on her report.
2) Chase seems very diligent about their records, and I suspect a dispute will come back verified, does anyone have insight on disputing items with Chase? I currently have her set up on disputebee.com for generating dispute letters, but I wanted more context on dealing with Chase before sending anything. If I dispute and it comes back verified, will that make it more difficult to negotiate with Chase afterwards?
3) If the consensus seems to be that it is not worth attempting to dispute Chase, what are her other options? Would Chase be open to a negotiated settlement that involved a pay-for-delete? I am someone that says "fuck the banks", so I see no reason for her to pay this debt if they're going to leave it on her report. I'm sure that will give a nominal raise to her score, but she'll still have a shit ton of late payments that will take 4 years to age off. If you think a negotiated settlement is possible, what is the smallest amount you think they might accept for this 3-year-old debt?
Thanks in advance for your help, I feel so bad that this girl has been struggling along with bad credit.
