How common are defined period D/s relationships?

Are all Ds intended to be forever? How is the experience to submit knowing it won’t be forever (say: the top will change countries soon)?
I’m talking here about more intense stuff, versus just in bed stuff. I have seen defined expiration vanilla relationships, but never D/s ones.
