Advice on restraints for beginners?

Me and my partner are interested in experimenting with restraint/bondage (both ways) - any advice on what to start with? Rope? Specialist harness/restraints system? Obviously don't want to spend loads before we've played a bit, and don't know whether we should start simpler (e.g. handcuffs) or more complex (e.g. full body tie down). Also whether we're better starting with independent restrains or by tying down? Thoughts? Any household things we could adapt safely?
