Where do you draw the line between having a preference and it being a fetish or treading into race play?

For example I have a preference for women of South Asian (East Indian) descent, despite the fact that the vast majority of the women I have dated/been in dynamics with have been some flavor of White European. While I have this preference I don't go out in search of women with the aforementioned descent nor do I avoid dating women of other descents.

On the flip side I know plenty of guys that like Asian women to the point of it being creepy, where they will actively pursue dating exclusively Asian women and have very unhealthy sexually stereotypical associations with Asian women.

I neither condone nor condemn race play as long as all parties are consenting, however I see it many times being very clearly an issue.

Also if anyone has any references to where attraction preferences come from, either biological or psychological I'd be curious to research it more.
