Is it possible to freeze aromatic ingridients (lemon zest, fresh basil etc) for later use without flavor deterioration?

Post Body

I don't always want to make pesto whenever I have to trim my basil plants, and I'd don't always need lemon zest when I am squeezing juice out of a lemon.

Is it possible to preserve these ingridients in the freezer? If so, how? For basil, should I just chuck the leaves into the freezer, or is it better to blanch them and then freeze?
