how to get stale candy?

Weird request incoming. I really like the taste/texture of stale licorice laces and stale sour belts. Sometimes what I’ll do is buy a 1 lb bag of either and leave it open and wait for it to firm up. I’m not sure what kind of preservatives do or do not prevent this, but half the time this technique doesn’t work and the candy stays soft and pliable as the day I bought it instead of being chewy. Is there any ingredient I can look out for that might be getting in my way? Is there some other way to make stale licorice laces besides leaving the bag open?
