Do you parents feel connected to or "get" American culture war issues?

Post Body

Same as question.

My parents really couldn't relate to or connect with many American hot button social issues like abortion or gay marriage or gun control. I think that this a common phenomenon.

I think largely this is because they aren't Christian and a lot of culture war issues kind of come out of the Christian vs Post-Christian Secular divide in Western (or American) culture.

On the flipside, I wouldn't necessarily expect Westerners to get beef bans as a culture war issue, largely they don't have the background/context for it.

Comments

Even Christian Indians get confused with the American culture wars. The Christianity in America especially among certain groups are rooted in history and culture. Even I felt out of place in American churches sometimes.

I didn't get it until i took classes in US history, sociology, diversity training, race in America, theology and growing up in a conservative evangelical American church.

My mom gets it now. My father does not relate at all.
