[TotK] Ultrahand doesn’t work with regular controls

So my son got Tears of the Kingdom for Christmas. We got to the part where there was a gap and he needed to use the Ultrahand to make a bridge with the planks.
When pressing L on the regular controls, nothing happens. We bought a “Zelda” wireless controller today and it worked! Is there some kind of setting that needs to be changed so that the regular controller works? The L button seems to be working on other games.
