What’s the difference with nsp to xci format? Does nsp take up room on my c:?

Hi all just having a bit of difficulty understanding, I have some games in nsp format which i you have to install updates and such separate where as the xci format is included as the same file.
As you have to install the files separate for an nsp does that take up room in my c: where an xci wouldnt as it’s included in the full package with no further install included?
