[R/F] Metalfoes; The Budgeting - For Link Format Locals

Post Body

Metalfoes are so cheap. Most of their common and rare prints got cheap Super prints in PEVO that literally nobody wants. Link format's looming shadow made their Pendulum/Fusion style super dodgy. Alkahest is a dollar.

After the long-awaited death of Majespecter Kirin, Metalfoes lost a good amount of oomph in their semi-control focused playstyle. Kirin was a major powerhouse in the deck, and with Link Format on our doorstep, Metalfoes just aren't looking so wonderful. However, despite obvious flaws and drawbacks to playing the deck, I think with the right tweaking and playing around, Metalfoes can actually be a Locals contender in Link Format, thanks to Alkahest being able to just steal Link Monsters away, and crippling the decks that need them.

Here is a list I'm toying around with for Locals, I'd love to hear some ideas and feedback on what to run (and more importantly, what not to run) as well as some fun tricks and interactions. Keep in mind this decklist is pretty budget, but I can afford some of the slightly pricier cards like Duelist Alliance if it helps. Ash is likely not an option.

Monsters [25]

Name Quantity Reason
Blackwing - Gofu, the Vague Shadow 3 The one-card Missus Radiant that leaves a monster to pop with Metalfoes Scales, or a one-card Decode Talker. Gofu has been used in Metalfoes decks before as not only three free things to pop with scales, but also a Level 5 Tuner you can use with Metalfoes Adamante to make Ultimaya Tzolkin. Although Tzolkin isn't very strong in links (in fact, he's crippled to death), Gofu still remains a powerful contender at 3 because of his ability to ladder his tokens into Missus Radiant, which in turn can be turned into a Decode Talker. Excellent to see in your starting hand, just not multiples, please.
Rescue Rabbit 1 A normal summon that grabs two Silverds, Steelens, or Goldrivers from the deck. Although he can't be special summoned from the deck, he can be Pendulum Summoned from the hand, which can facilitate or extend plays. Plus, with Rescue Ferret coming (as a Secret, ugh) in COTD, you can run Emerging Emergency Rescute Rescue with Ferret, Rabbit, and perhaps Hamster. Also a one-card Missus Radiant.
Luster Pendulum, the Dracoslayer 1 Stacks your extra deck and deckthins in the process, which is honestly pretty nice. Pinch tuner for Ignister Prominence, the Blasting Dracoslayer, who is very nice non-targeting removal.
Ghost Ogre and Snow Rabbit 2 Reasonably cheap(?) and available thanks to the Mega Tins, Ghost Ogre puts in work against a lot of cards, such as Dragonic Diagram. It's also a tuner, AND a Psychic, which is useful for Mind over Matter in a pinch, as well as being used to Syncho with Silverd to make a Triple Effect Proc'd Metaphys Horus, which protects it for a turn, negates a monster AND steals one, which you can then use as Fusion Material. Nice.
Guiding Ariadne 1 Ew. Why is this card in here? Partially thanks to its ability to search Mind Over Matter, and whatever Counter-Traps you may have on hand, such as Strikes and Warning (Ultimate Providence is the one used in this build to emphasize on the Budget aspect, as well as Ariadne's Scale Effect making it a free Omni-Effect Negation.) It's pretty easy to trigger too, and you can trigger it again and again, even multiple times each turn.
Archfiend Eccentrick 2 Easy and reusable spot removal that acts as a back-up Scale. Also Level 3 for the Synchro Summon of Metaphys Horus, however you don't get the 1-Turn Immunity effect.
Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju 2 I run 2 and side the third. Nobody likes fully immune Master Peace. Plus, you can just steal it back with Alkahest for a sweet 2200 DEF increase. Generally a good form of removal all around, as Volflame, Mithrilium, Orichalc, Adamante, and even Metaphys can just beat over it.
Raremetalfoes Bismugear 2 Bismugear is the Scarm of Metalfoes. Although he(?) is great, you really don't need that many high scales for fear of bricking, plus his(?) effect isn't an immediate benefit. However, he(?) does search whatever Metalfoes monster you need to complete your scales, which in tandem with say, Luster Pendulum, makes for a pretty neat combo.
Metalfoes Steelen 2 Metalfoes Scales, Material, and is your ideal card to be summoned with Rescue Rabbit, as it'll equalize your scales a bit and save Goldriver (a low scale) and Silverd (who is useful for the Metaphys play). At 2 to attempt and equalize scales a bit, as he is generally the least useful one of the Maindeck Metalfoes.
Metalfoes Silverd 3 Scales, Material, and the ideal Synchro material with Ghost Ogre to make Metaphys Horus, as it'll fulfill the conditions to trigger all three of its effects. Also a decently high ATK value for a Level 3. Also Level 4 or Lower for the Rescue Rabbit into Missus Radiant play.
Metalfoes Goldriver 3 Scales, Material, also a slick level 4 to Synchro with Luster Pendulum to make Ignister Prominence, the Blasting Dracoslayer, or to overlay with Ariadne for Daigusto Emeral. Also Level 4 or Lower for the Rescue Rabbit into Missus Radiant play.
Metalfoes Volflame 3 Scales, Material, also the big beater of the maindeck Metalfoes. 2400 Attack to beat over Gameciel and to inflict overall havoc alongside Orichalc. Honestly a great member of the Metalfoes archetype, as he is an accessible beatstick that can be searched with Summoner's Art.

Spells and Traps [15]

Name Quantity Reason
Summoner's Art 2 Recently reprinted in PEVO, it searches out Volflame for pinch scales. Also searches out Qliphort Scout, if you choose to go down that path for the Cyber Dragon Infinity play.
Painful Decision 2 A Common from the Dinosmasher's Fury Structure Deck, or a 50 cent Secret. Your call. Searches out Goldriver, Silverd, or Steelen for scales, at the cost of pitching one to Pendulum Hell, or the Graveyard.
Metalfoes Fusion 1 Everyone's favorite infinitely self-recycling fusion spell. Ran at one because it's easily searchable, and it shuffles itself back into the deck for your convenience.
Fullmetalfoes Fusion 1 Considered bumping up to two, as the typical saying is "Run as many of this as you do Alkahests". However, it too is searchable, and makes Alkahest a major threat during your opponent's turn.
Dark Hole 1 Budget Raigeki. A super was cheaply reprinted in DESO, which was really nice.
Mystical Space Typhoon 1 Battles of Legend: Lights Revenge gave us a reprint of Anti-Spell Fragrance, a big no-no-no to this deck. Although it won't get rid of ASF immediately, you can set it and pop it next turn.
Metalfoes Combination 1 Recovers Metalfoes from Pendulum Hell (the Graveyard) upon Fusion Summon, which can easily set up a push for game by Fusion Summoning Orichalc and SSing Volflame. Also a pinch search when popped. Honestly a little slow, however.
Metalfoes Counter 2 I've heard varying ideas on whether to run 1 or 3 of this card. So I've just decided to settle in the middle and run 2. Extends plays and acts as protection from OTKs, and also helps recover scales from the Extra Deck, which is important in the later grind game. All around a great card, which also got a neat Super reprint.
Mind Over Matter 3 The aforementioned almost Omni-Negate that only costs one Psychic Monster. Since tributed Metalfoes just go to the Extra Deck, you can simply just summon them back to a Linked Zone, or recover them using Counter's banish effect. Searchable with Ariadne, and ran at 3 so you can force your opponent to choose it.
Ultimate Providence 1 Honestly just sub this for Solemn Warning or Strike. I personally use it because it's a VERY cheap Secret, plus with Ariadne in the scale, you don't have to discard anything for an Omni-Effect Negation. A really underrated card, honestly.

Extra Deck [15]

Name Quantity Reason
Fullmetalfoes Alkahest 2 Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth. READY STEADY CAN'T HOLD ME BACK. The cherry on top of the Metalfoes Control lineup, Alkahest is a quick-effect, non-destruction removal that only works on the opponent's turn. A major threat to anything not untargetable, Alkahest easily becomes an indestructible wall, as he gains DEF equal to the ATK of stolen and equipped monsters. Sadly in Link Format, Scales take up two of your S/T zones, so Alkahest should be used sparingly, as having too many Equipped Monsters will lock you out of your backrow. Provides pop fodder for your scales, and perhaps Fusion Material for Mithrilium or Adamante. Steals opponent's Link Monsters to prevent them from laddering into their own Decode Talker, too.
Metalfoes Mithrilium 2 Simultaneously Non-Destruction Removal AND Graveyard Recovery. A wonderfully good card. Requires a Metalfoes and a Pendulum Monster as material, meaning reoccurring Eccentricks or Ariadne can fulfill this, as can all your maindeck Metalfoes. Decent ATK value, too.
Metalfoes Orichalc 1 The one you bring out to push for game. Punishes your opponent for destroying it, and also grants not just himself but ALL Metalfoes DOUBLE PIERCING DAMAGE. Amazing. Ran at one, since he really should only be used as a game-ender.
Metalfoes Adamante 2 His materials are generic, meaning he can turn use pretty much any stolen monster. The only issue is that deck space is very tight with the Link Monsters in the mix, so I'm debating cutting him to 1 to fit in something else such as Castel.
Ignister Prominence, the Blasting Dracoslayer 1 Can be made with Luster Goldriver, Luster Steelen x2, GOSR Eccentrick or Silverd x2, and is wonderful non-targeting removal. Surprisingly beefy, too.
Metaphys Horus 1 Everyone hates this card in Metalfoes. With GOSR and Silverd, you trigger all three effects, which is disgusting field presence since his effect negation is permanent. The fact that he covers his ass from Bottomless and other Trap Holes, and from other harmful effects on the turn he's summoned this way is great. Also steals a monster to use for Adamante.
Daigusto Emeral 1 You have a decent amount of Level 4s in the deck, and Emeral can not only Special Summon Volflames from the Graveyard (it has no Level Limitation on the revival of a Normal Monster), he can also recycle your lost Pendulums back into the deck. Staple as hell.
Link Spider 3 If I could I'd run it at 4. Not only does he actually work standalone with Metalfoes, Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower one from your hand to the field, but he also ladders into Missus Radiant if you have two of him.
Missus Radiant 1 Meant for laddering from Link Spider to give you Two Link Zones. Alternatively, you can ladder into Decode Talker. Sadly the Earth ATK increase doesn't benefit anything but itself and Link Spider.
Decode Talker 1 Big Boy who turns a zone on your opponent's field into fodder for its negation effect. Gains up to 1500 ATK, which equals out to a chunky 3800 ATK, which becomes a MAJOR threat. Can be laddered into from Gofu, which is a devastating first turn field.

I don't have much experience dueling in Link Format, so any tips, suggestions, corrections or ideas are super welcome. I've been told to try ZooFoes, however with the Extra already tight enough as it is, I'm unsure how I'd fit a Drident, Broadbull, Tigermortar and Lyca in there. I'm definitely interested in a Link Format ZooFoes list if you have one, too. Thanks for reading!
