So, Guardian's backstory confuses me?

Guardian has been a character since the pilot but he feels like such a footnote. I feel like a lot of stuff happened to him but we only see the smallest fraction. I don't want him to be a main, but i also wish i knew what has been going on with him because i feel so lost.
