Budgeting if not cash constraint.
Post Body

I am wondering what folks do to budget for expenses like trips throughout the year. We have a largish travel budget because our kids live in other cities, and we use that to pay for trips to visit them, or to bring them back home. This means some months we are in the red in the travel category and other times we are doing good. We know at the end we will not spend more than what we have budgeted. The way YNAB is set up now, you cannot have a category stay red past the end of the month. YNAB 4 let you do that-and it worked well for my situation. This version, will pull the funds to cover the overspending from the income coming in-which now means I have less to budget in my other categories-and that means I have more overspent. Its frustrating and I don't know how to deal with this. Any ideas? I know what the rules are and it might have made sense when I was running low on cash-but thats not the case here. I have a stable income and because I am in a unionized job, I also know my raises. My spouses runs their own organizations and is also salaried so that is also stable.

do you mean it’s pulling from funds you’ve already assigned in future months? ynab only uses dollars you currently have, not “income coming in”

if you’ve assigned funds to the future and overspent in the current month, it’s basically telling you that some of your dollars you had assigned in the future need to have a new job to cover this overspending.
