I may or may not have written this entire post and then chome crashed. Well, here we go!
I'm a 22 year old female, 250 pounds (started somewhere around 320), looking to improve my health and fitness, gain overall strength, tone, and lose weight (but I know they all go hand in hand). In the future I'd love to start rock climbing, get on more overnight hikes, and participate in a 5k, half and possibly a sprint tri. But all those things won't happen overnight.
Right now I'm primarily running on the elliptical for 50-60 minutes at a time, doing some semblance of a core routine (if you could even call it that), and have just gotten back into yoga. In December I was swimming 3-4x week. I should also mention that I'm (still) rehabbing from a knee injury (ITB and hyperflexia), so that limits what I can do. Essentially I can't use the treadmill and have to be weary of any kneeling exercises and excessive squatting.
This is one of those cases where too much information isn't a good thing. Between Reddit, the internet, tumblr, friends, so on and so forth, I'm getting a thousand different answers and I'm absolutely overwhelmed with information, just shy of a full blown panic attack. Generally what I have been finding are a couple staple routines (Enter the Kettlebell, Strong Lifts, etc), but they tend to focus on one discipline, but I'm looking to incorporate several different disciplines, simply because I enjoy many activities.
So, how do I formulate a workout routine that will include elliptical training, yoga, swimming, and some strength routine? I'm leaning towards kettlebells, swiss ball and bodyweight exercises to start off. I should mention that I'm not a total n00b. I've trained on and off over the past 4 years, and my breaks were mainly due to school stress, injury, or something like that. However, it also means that when I step back in the gym I instantly forget everything I know, particularly when it comes to strength training. I do remember that I generally followed a lower body/core/upper body split.
I work part time and my hours change on a weekly basis. I have access to a full gym with a pool, yoga classes, and other fitness classes as well (zumba, step, core, etc). So, my program needs to have structure, but some degree of flexibility where I can swap out workouts depending on if I can make it to ___ yoga class or if the pool is not open. I'm also willing to give two a days a shot, but once again that will depend on work schedule and my plethora of doctors visits, which leads me to...
Last but not least, I just started BC which has given me the munchies (:[). Also pending on my mood, I may be starting another medication which has a 70% chance of weight gain. Yeah, lets hope I can avoid that one. I'm trying to watch what I eat, but I'm also trying not to be too down on myself for when things go wrong.
I think I've covered all of the pertinent information, but let me know if I skipped something. Like I said, my brain is flooded and I'm feeling more down and out that happy and excited to create this plan.
Thanks in advance for any/all help.
Edit: Clarification.
