Expand xbox one memory with USB stick?

Hey there!
I googled on how to expand my xbox memory. I have a 1tb one but my bf has an 500gb one which is just not enough for all the games we want to play together and separately.
A lot of articles say you can expand with an external hard drive as long as it's 256 gb. Others say 128 gb. I don't care about the minimum size because I want to expand with 256 or 512 gb.. but I can't really find trustworthy articles that say it can be done with an usb stick?
Has anyone expanded their memory with a stick?
