Hey, so Googling hasn’t exactly helped me, and I am not a tech person at all. I wanted to shout into the void on this sub and see if someone had similar issues to me. Here is what I know so far;
I have a 2016 Arris Surfboard modem/router (could find more specific specs if need be), that hooks up to my Xbox One S via Ethernet cable. The router itself works quite consistently on a wireless level for my Switch (although I haven’t got on that in a while), my phone (I never see any drop in connection), but might have an issue with my Amazon Echo, I don’t know. I haven’t really followed up with this a lot, other than whenever I try to get the Echo to hook up wirelessly in the setup section, it just doesn’t work. Anyway I’m trying to give as many details as possible here.
My Xbox on the other hand is really inconsistent. Like, sometimes it’ll turn on, and won’t be connected to Xbox Live. This is probably the most common thing. It will connect like 5 minutes later most of the time, and the dashboard will refresh itself. Other times I have to reset the Xbox, other times I need to hold down the power button to turn it off and finally some times I have to unplug the power cable for a bit. I also sporadically unplug my modem and plug it back in. SOMETIMES during this my Xbox briefly makes it seem like it’s been factory reset, with the “get started” square on the dashboard that I believe is the same one that pops up when you start up a new Xbox.
Finally, regarding games, I have a lot of them, but I haven’t done really in depth research as to what works and what doesn’t, but here is what I can tell you.
Ultimate Marvel versus Capcom absolutely doesn’t load. I think that’s the game that in and of itself just doesn’t work, among the things I’ve played lately.
Sekiro is fine, Dark Souls III is fine, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is fine. Monopoly is fine. Jeopardy is fine.
Multiplayer games are where there seems to be the biggest issue.
This first started with Apex Legends in like, March or April. I was getting dropped from games constantly, so it turned out I had to forward my ports/open my ports. Now, I’ve seen this suggested a few times across the internet, but it was a weird concept to me because I’ve been on Xbox Live for 10 years and have never had to do that. I mean maybe there were scenarios where a game didn’t work and I just gave up on it for a period of time, but like, yeah, I’m not tech-savvy so even figuring that out was a grind. Anyway I opened some ports, Apex worked for a while. At some point I had to reestablish my wireless networks after I got back from a week away, and I had to reopen some ports? I was a bit lazier this time and only opened a few, but Apex has been incredibly consistent, I’m not sure if it’s the ports or just something on EA/Respawn/whoever’s side that made the game more amicable for people that don’t open ports.
Overwatch is super hit or miss regardless of when it works. I have Cox, and heard there was an issue with that. Sometimes I have to switch my port selection from Auto, to Manual, and choose that one default port.
Rainbow Six Siege absolutely doesn’t work. Even after opening some ports.
Gears of War 4 I had some issues with last week trying to establish a connection for online co-op campaign (I was hosting).
Anyway I think that is sort of the extent of my details. Unfortunately I haven’t done much troubleshooting using Ethernet for my Switch or PS4, so those are probably things I should do to see if it’s modem/router based. I also haven’t really talked to my ISP, but like, it seems to only be a startup and games issue. Amazon, HBOGO, Netflix, Hulu all seem to work fine, although there was a period of time where HBOGO would drop me every few minutes.
I guess I just hope that there is someone here that might be able to read this and recognize some common threads, because while I’m waiting for a themed XIX to upgrade, I definitely could save up for a new modem/router. Or maybe just a different Xbox One S if the system is the actual problem.
