Did the US ever fight the imperial Japanese army?

Obviously they fought the navy, im unsure if air units were under the navy or the army.
On Wikipedia for iwo jima, it says 109th Naval Ground Troops, but when i click the link it says its a division of the imperial army, so im unsure.
