So I've been trying to articulate this concept in a concise way to several people I'm beta reading for:
It's very distracting and annoying to the reader when you mention background details that are really out of place or fascinating, but then are never explored or explained.
Does anyone know what this is called?
I was listening to one of Brandon Sanderson's lectures and I think he made the analogy where you show someone a video of a man walking across town and then in the background you can see a gorilla just hanging out in a phonebooth for a couple of seconds. Suddenly we don't care about anything this man is saying or what's going on in his life; there's a bloody silverback giving his mum a ring, what the hell is going on there?
I can't really find much mention of this idea by that name anywhere, and I'm wondering if people have heard of it by another name or analogy, thanks.
