Is living with your characters normal?
Post Body

Not sure how to start this question. I have a lot of friends/peers who are professional writers and none of them write the way I do. I was curious if anyone else writes this way. I create characters in my head. And for weeks, months, I let them "live" in my head. They tell me who they are, who they are to each other. I see them very clearly in their world. Sometimes they'll give me a line of dialogue that I write down and keep safe. As they live in my head, the story writes itself. And after a few weeks/months I sit down and I outline my story that already exists. Is this weird? I don't sit down and invent on paper, I don't free write, I don't create like others, I don't start writing a story to see where it takes me. I let the characters exist and they tell me the story. I've always lived in my imagination since I was sick a lot as a kid and isolated. So maybe what others do on paper I got used to doing in my mind. Just curious if any other writers let their worlds percolate before putting pen to paper.
