In American Gods, the protagonist is Shadow: a man who's experiencing what it's like to leave the prison system, only to find out that his life outside prison will never be the same as he hoped.
In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is a respectable hobbit, highly regarded in his community... However, when Gandalf and a squad of 13 dwarfs come and ruin his peaceful life, he decides to set out on an adventure with them!
These are two examples of how a couple of the best writers of their generation(s) began the book that put them on 'the map.' (mainstream audience)
