Does anyone else avoid self-published books?
Post Body

I know this might be a contentious subject, and I'm not slamming self-publishing. There are some great self-published books out there (as well as crappy traditionally published ones).

Has anyone else noticed the overall quality of self-published books seems to be going down over the past year? I'm in the process of revising my 2nd novel, which I plan to submit for publication, and after being "all about self pub" and even co-writing a fairly well received self-published novel, I'm starting to veer away from them. I find myself going back to traditionally published books as the benchmark to compare my own writing to in terms of quality.

It seems like the Kindle marketplace is becoming overwhelming, and many of the books (even some 4 and 5 star ones) are either poorly written/edited, or extremely derivative, with a pretty cover slapped on them. Again, I'm not saying the "New Releases" shelf in B&N isn't full of Hunger Games clones, but it seems to be getting crazy on Amazon.

TL;DR: Are self-published books generally getting worse, or am I just bad at using Amazon filters?
