So I've been writing this story about a boy. After his parents died, he and his little brother have gone to live in a group home and then a foster home with an abusive foster father. After a few years in that environment, he and his little brother are brought to a far better home and a far better family who treat the brothers very well. But he struggles to adjust and there is a lot of build up where he wrestles with his experiences, his perceived duties to his little brother and loyalty to his late parents.
After a lot of build up, during which he tries his hardest to keep himself together, I wanted a trigger for an emotional release. First I thought of a book, but my character isn't really the type who enjoys reading. Moreover I wanted the crest of his character arc to be more "explosive" so I wanted something which can be experienced quickly but can still evoke an emotional response.
I have decided I want him to hear a song about hope, of which he has little to none, of grasping happiness and struggling when everything feels dark.
At the moment I'm leaning toward "After the storm" by Mumford & Sons, but I would like to know what other people think about my choice and if maybe someone has some other suggestions.
And I would also like to know if you have used music in that fashion in your own stories and how you went about it. Let's talk about that :)
Greetings, Makromag
