How do you fall in love with your characters?
Post Body

For those of you who write fiction, how do you fall in love with the characters you write about?

Are they characters that sprang to mind and just wouldn't leave you alone? Or did you have to work at it? Crafting them, changing their story here, and there, and tweaking it until you fell in love with them?

Did you come up with an idea for a character and run with it? Like, "An angry wizard distrustful of the world." Or did you come up with the story plot first, and just write a character into it that made the story move forward on the arc you wanted?

Do you love your characters, or do you write them out of compulsion?
