Prior to becoming a writer, I had originally dreamed of being a comic artist. By the time I had gotten around to applying to art schools, a former mentor of mine who is currently working on getting his novel published and is also a professional comic illustrator gave me a sneak peek into both worlds that made me realize illustration was just my medium to tell stories, and my true passion was just to be a writer.
Starting last summer I began my journey of completing the first draft of my novel, a journey that had plenty of ups and downs but ultimately I enjoyed and almost never ran out of ideas. However, started 2024 I entered a major depression and my creative well had completely dried up. I was done blasting out ideas, and despite having much more room for my story to grow I just couldn’t envision what I wanted to happen next.
Until I dusted off my drawing tablet and felt like redrawing some of my finished scenes or wip scenes for fun. I had often drawn my characters or action scenes. I like this because it makes them feel more real to me. But then suddenly I started drawing out the chapter I was having issues completing, and suddenly it all started clicking. Actually seeing the scenes scribbled out gave me so many ideas and it was like a dam had been broken in my mind. Content was pouring out and I almost had trouble containing it all and spent an entire night writing down notes and filling notebooks and drawing out anything I could praying the well wouldn’t run dry again. And so far it’s still been flowing strong!
This is mostly just a post to give hope to anyone suffering through writers block. Whether it be a method like this, or even something tailored more to your style of creativity, it’s really good to find your own ways out of writers block
